Struck by a Wikipedia article that noted that the Inuits don't possess a word form music, I got into researching how the language that surrounds music can colour/shape our conceptions of music as a whole, but also in more specific and subtle ways. I pose three broad questions in this video relating to language and music:
Firstly, can we talk about the music of non-Western cultures if the concept of music doesn’t exist in their language?
Secondly, if we can do this, should we?
Finally, and more broadly, how does our language limit our understanding of pieces of music themselves when talking about any music written by those who don’t speak it?
