I believe all Scripture is God breathed. The Word of God is inspired by God. I believe that the Bible should be the final authority in all matters of faith and practice. The Word of God is our foundation. It keeps us rooted in faith and in God. By having a solid foundation, we can remain standing when strong winds arise. When we’re going through struggle, trials, and tribulation, we will not waver or fall because our faith is firmly rooted in God and in His revelation, in His Word. Our faith is not based on the current culture, on modern beliefs or worldviews that change with the times like fashion trends. Our faith is based on what God says about Himself in the Bible. Our faith is based on God’s standard, not the standard of men. God’s standard transcends culture and trends, it transcends time.
When I talk to someone of a different religion or worldview, my first instinct is to refer them to the Word of God, to show them what the Bible says – to show them why the Word of God is true – to show them why the Gospel is true. And maybe if I have enough knowledge of their worldview or religion, I may try to show them how their beliefs are misguided. My pastor has often said, “A person may be sincere, but they may be sincerely wrong.” Meaning that a person may be sincere in their beliefs, but their beliefs may be sincerely wrong. And if what the Bible says about heaven, hell, salvation, and Jesus is true, then it is our responsibility to guide them to the truth. It is the Christian’s responsibility to seek discussions with people of other worldviews. The most loving thing that we can do is tell people about the love of Christ and how we can be reconciled to Him – how we can receive the gift of grace, salvation, eternal life. Jesus said about himself that He is the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father but by Him.
One word that I hear often in apologetics or evangelism is the word evidence. Often, we ask people what evidence they have for arriving at their conclusions – at the conclusions that they have confidence in. “How did you come to that conclusion?” we might say. However, this can obviously be turned back on us.
What evidence do Christians have for believing what we believe? Like I mentioned earlier, my first instinct is to refer to the Word of God. I believe the Bible is inspired by God and that it is true. God’s Word is the foundation for my faith. But I guess what naturally follows is, how do we know that the Bible is true? What evidence do we have for believing that the Bible is truly the Word of God? This is important because if the Bible is true, then we must take it very seriously and adhere to what it says. Because there are claims in the Bible that affect every single person.
When I first started uploading videos on YouTube in 2015, I wrote a spoken word poem titled, “Why the Bible?” It’s basically a poem responding to people who say that the Bible is just a regular collection of books written by uneducated illiterate peasants. The poem is no longer on the channel, but I do want to revise it and release a second version in the future. I want to quickly share some of the things that I mentioned in the poem. And things that I have told people in the past as to why the Word of God is true. Looking back, I think my evidence may have not been enough. There are additional details that I have learned along the way that may have been more useful. But at the end of the day, I think the key is that we are obedient to God and faithful in sharing His Word. Our job is not necessarily to convince people but to preach. The Holy Spirit is the one that convinces, persuades, and transforms the heart.
