Peak Inverse Voltage
Peak Inverse Voltage is defined as the maximum voltage present across the diode ends during the period of non - conductance. During the negative half of the applied voltage the diode does not conduct and hence the voltage across the diode is equal to the applied voltage. Thus, the peak inverse voltage in case of half wave rectifier is Em (the maximum value of applied voltage). The P.I.V. may produce breakdown in the diode. So, the rating of the diode must be large enough to withstand peak inverse voltage.
Sometimes for comparing various rectifier circuits, a ratio of P.I.V. to the average output voltage is specified. For HWR, this ratio
