Discovering the OUTER MEMBRANE of GRAM-NEGATIVE BACTERIA
🔬 Hello everyone! In this video, we're going to delve into a unique structure: the outer membrane of Gram-negative bacteria.
🦠 We'll begin by exploring the bacterial outer membrane, a unique structure that differentiates Gram-negative bacteria from Gram-positive bacteria. We'll see how it's composed and what its function is in protecting and ensuring the survival of these bacteria.
We'll focus on Lipopolysaccharide (LPS), an essential molecule of the outer membrane, and break down its components: Lipid A, the KDO core, and the O antigen. We'll also discuss its role as endotoxins and its impact on infected organisms.
In addition, we'll analyze porins and other similar proteins that allow molecules to pass through the membrane into the periplasmic space, a vital region between the outer membrane and the cytoplasmic membrane. We'll see their role in antibiotic resistance.
