Since Sarah Johnsone partnered with her band in 2021, a soulful, pithy artist has emerged; one who’s unafraid to set out her political opinions, and reveal lyrics which touch on social dynamics with a wisdom beyond her years.
“As a musician, I’ve classically spent a lot of my time working in bars. Over the years I’ve identified a similar type of character that’s lurked at most venues I’ve worked at. The pub man, usually old but can be any age, who’s grumpy till he’s had a few. This song is what I imagine about their internal monologue. The song is set in a pub called The Rose and Crown, not based on any specific one. I chose it to play around with the theme of being English and repressed, as ‘rose’ and ‘crown’ are both symbols of England.”

The Glasshouse is a home for live music lovers.
It’s a place where you can hear rock legends or pop icons on the same night as folk trios or opera singers. Where new musicians are nurtured and showcased on the same stages as platinum-selling performers. And where youth choirs and tambourine-shaking toddlers practise in the same spaces as our acclaimed orchestra, Royal Northern Sinfonia.
Music lives and grows here.
