When people suddenly disappear and remain missing, a crime can never be ruled out. In the first few days, the police always work at full speed to investigate. Nevertheless, success isn't always guaranteed. "SRF DOK" explores the lives of people who have vanished without a trace.

Every year, 5,000 people are reported missing in Switzerland. Most of them reappear within a few days. Others remain missing – leaving their families and friends with many questions. The biggest mystery: Why did the person disappear without a trace? What happened? Did someone simply have enough and go into hiding? Was it suicide? Or was someone the victim of a crime?
Marco Hauenstein is still searching for answers. His mother vanished without a trace over 20 years ago, shortly after his birth. She was a drug addict and worked as a prostitute in Zurich. One night, she disappeared forever.
The family of German national Ingeborg Springinsgut also has to live with this uncertainty. In the autumn of 2010, she was hiking with her husband in the Goms region. The vacation ended tragically. Their paths diverged in rugged terrain, seemingly for only a few minutes. But she never reappeared. The Valais cantonal police remain baffled.
When people vanish without a trace, it means that all those affected and their families must find a way to cope with the uncertainty that, in all these cases, a crime can never be completely ruled out.
