Had another “tech” session last week with ‪@najibjeeby4182‬ , our bassist/substitute drummer/fellow audio gearhead.

This time we added 2 tom mics to the setup for a total of 6 drum mics: 1 x Shure SM57 on kick, 2 x Stagg SDM70 on snare and rack toms, 2 x Behringer C2 condensers on overheads, and 1 x unknown studio mic on floor tom.

We set up the overheads in a spaced pair pattern this time around. And together with the individual tom mics, we were able to get a much wider stereo image than from the previous session.

Also, this time I ran 3 outputs from my guitar. A stereo output from my Boss CE-5 Chorus Ensemble (left channel 100% dry and right channel 100% wet) together with a DI output straight from the guitar pickups.

The 3rd guitar DI output allowed me to re-amp a 3rd track in the DAW using the Amped Roots 5034 Fluff amp sim. (Centre channel to beef up the tone.)

Some observations:
1. More is truly more! Hard to go back to a 4-mic setup after this… 😅
2. Spaced pair pattern for overheads are so much nicer than XY!
3. Will switch to drum mic clips for the snare and tom mics in order to reduce the number of mic stands required. 😬
4. SM57 on kick is usable but going forward, will need to look into getting a more modern metal sounding kick mic. 🤔
