How to Remove/Replace Miata Ignition Switch | Part 1

Steps to Remove a Miata Ignition Switch
Tools and Materials Needed:
1. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED: VESSEL BALL GRIP Interchangeable Screwdriver (dont strip your screws! https://amzn.to/3LuCZSV
2. Phillips head screwdriver
3. Flathead screwdriver
4. Socket wrench set
5. Ignition switch replacement (if necessary). This is the part I used: # D001-66-151A
Step-by-Step Guide:
1.Disconnect the Battery:
Locate the battery in the engine bay.
Use a wrench to loosen the negative terminal and disconnect it to prevent any electrical shorts.
2.Remove the Steering Column Covers:
Locate the screws underneath the steering column cover.
Use a Phillips head screwdriver to remove these screws.
Carefully pull off the upper and lower steering column covers to expose the ignition switch.
3.Locate the Ignition Switch:
Find the ignition switch at the base of the steering column. It’s a small, cylindrical component connected to a wiring harness.
4.Remove the Ignition Switch Screws:
Use the appropriate socket wrench or screwdriver to remove the screws holding the ignition switch in place.
Keep the screws in a safe place as you will need them to install the new switch.
5.Disconnect the Wiring Harness:
Locate the wiring harness connected to the ignition switch.
Gently press the release tab on the connector and pull it apart to disconnect the wiring harness from the switch.
6.Remove the Ignition Switch:
With the wiring harness disconnected and screws removed, gently pull the ignition switch out of its housing.
7.Inspect or Replace the Ignition Switch:
If you’re replacing the switch, take the new ignition switch and connect the wiring harness to it.
Align the new switch in the same position as the old one and secure it with the screws you previously removed.
8.Reassemble the Steering Column Covers:
Place the upper and lower steering column covers back in position.
Reinsert and tighten the screws to secure the covers.
9. Reconnect the Battery:
Reattach the negative terminal to the battery and tighten it with the wrench.
10. Test the New Ignition Switch:
Insert the key into the new ignition switch and turn it to ensure it works properly.
Test the ignition by starting the car to make sure everything is functioning correctly.
By following these steps, even a beginner can successfully remove and replace the ignition switch on a Miata.
