The mechanism for the addition of a TES (triethylsilyl) protecting group. Tertiary alcohols react very poorly with TES-Cl. Pyridine can also be used as a promoter. Alternatively, the triethylsilyltriflate TES-OTf can be used to introduce the triethylsilyl group. TES ethers can be selectively removed in the presence of TBS ethers.
