Today we're going to compare manual versus mechanized paint application, i.e., using a paint roller versus an airless spray gun.
We've prepared a test wall with camouflage-like patterns. Why? Because we want to test not only the working speed of both methods, but also their coverage and finishing results.
Here we'll be applying a white dispersion paint, which will highlight any imperfections in the wall, if any, thanks to the color contrast between the surface and the material.
The pump used in this video is a Graco Ultra Max II 795 pump equipped with a Graco Contractor spray gun and a Graco RAC X LP 517 nozzle. To avoid any risk of splashing, we added an anti-spit valve and an extension to the gun.

For us, the goal isn't to go as fast as possible, but rather to compare the two methods in the most realistic way possible. The focus is on the quality of the final work to break down some of the prejudices that persist between traditional roller painting and modern airless spray painting.
We often hear that airless paint creates overspray, that it's not clean, and that it takes a long time. These are precisely the points we'll be examining in this test.
Each section of wall has an area of 14.5 m² and measures 5.80 m long by 2.50 m high. The split screen view shows you each application simultaneously. Mathias, our Airless Discounter trainer, doesn't have an evil twin, but he's happy to do this exercise twice.
Now let's look at the test results. With the airless spray gun, the job lasted just under 3 minutes. With the roller, it lasted just over 10 minutes, three times longer.
Besides speed, we want to see the application quality. This paint is Class 1 coverage, which allowed for a very smooth and opaque finish with the airless spray gun. This wasn't the case with the paint roller: we'll have to apply a second coat to achieve the same finish quality as with the spray gun, which necessarily doubles the total work time.
Furthermore, if you run your hand over the wall afterwards, you'll feel the rough texture of the roller, whereas with a spray gun, it's much smoother.
This is therefore an advantage on all surfaces that must remain smooth, such as plastered walls, for example.
As for the clichés mentioned about airless painting, let's first talk about overspray. If your machine is properly adjusted, you'll experience very little of it. Once you know how to do it, you'll produce almost no overspray.
A second misconception concerns the tedious cleaning of the pump. The one we used in this video will take 5 minutes to clean by our expert. For a beginner, this will take a few minutes longer, which isn't much longer than when you have to rinse your brushes and rollers.
If you factor in the time saved on the application itself (over 7 minutes in this case), the cleaning time for the machine is even shorter than painting this wall with a roller.
