Hey everyone, welcome back to The Expert's YouTube! Today I'm going to talk about one of the most fascinating and tragic events in history: the sinking of the Titanic. You've probably heard of this ship before, maybe from movies, books, or documentaries. But how much do you really know about it? Let's find out!

The Titanic was 882.5 feet long, 92.5 feet wide and 175 feet high. It weighed 46,329 tons and could carry up to 3,327 passengers and crew. It had four huge funnels, but only three of them were functional; the fourth one was added for aesthetic reasons. It had three propellers that could propel it at a maximum speed of 23 knots (about 26 miles per hour). It was not the fastest ship of its time, but it was certainly the most impressive.

The Titanic set sail on its maiden voyage from Southampton, England, on April 10th, 1912. It was headed for New York City, with stops in Cherbourg, France, and Queenstown, Ireland. On board were some of the wealthiest people in the world, such as John Jacob Astor IV, Benjamin Guggenheim, Isidor and Ida Straus, and Margaret \"Molly\" Brown. There were also hundreds of immigrants from Europe who were seeking a new life in America or Canada. The first-class passengers enjoyed lavish amenities and entertainment, while the third-class passengers had more modest facilities and shared crowded cabins.

On the night of April 14th, 1912, the Titanic was sailing through the North Atlantic Ocean at a high speed. The weather was clear and calm, but there was a hidden danger lurking below the surface: icebergs. The ship's crew had received several warnings from other ships about ice in the area, but they did not slow down or change course. At 11:40 pm (ship's time), lookout Frederick Fleet spotted an iceberg directly ahead of the ship. He rang the bell three times and telephoned the bridge: \"Iceberg right ahead!\" The officer on duty, William Murdoch, ordered \"Hard-a-starboard\" (turn right) and \"Full astern\" (reverse engines). He also activated a lever that closed watertight doors below decks to prevent flooding.

However, it was too late. The Titanic struck the iceberg on its starboard (right) side with a glancing blow. The impact caused a series of holes along the hull that stretched for about 300 feet. Water began to pour into six of the ship's sixteen compartments. The ship's designer, Thomas Andrews, who was on board as a passenger, inspected the damage and calculated that the ship would sink in less than two hours. He informed Captain Edward Smith, who ordered the crew to prepare the lifeboats and send out distress signals.

The Titanic had 20 lifeboats that could carry up to 1,178 people. However, there were more than 2,200 people on board. To make matters worse, many of the lifeboats were launched only partially filled due to confusion and panic among the crew and passengers. Some people refused to leave the ship or did not believe it was sinking. Others were prevented from reaching the lifeboats by barriers of class or gender. The first-class passengers had priority over the second- and third-class passengers. Women and children were given preference over men.

As the Titanic sank lower into the water, people became more desperate and frantic. Some jumped into the freezing ocean or tried to climb onto lifeboats that were already full. Others stayed on board until the very end or went down with the ship. At 2:20 am (ship's time), the Titanic broke in half and plunged into the depths of the sea. More than 1,500 people died in the disaster, either by drowning, hypothermia, or injuries. Only 705 people survived, most of them in lifeboats that were rescued by another ship, the Carpathia, which arrived on the scene at 4:00 am.

The sinking of the Titanic shocked and saddened the world. It was a huge loss of life and a blow to human pride and confidence. It also raised questions about the safety and regulation of maritime travel, the responsibility and accountability of ship owners and operators, and the social and ethical implications of class and gender discrimination. The Titanic became a symbol of the fragility of human life and the folly of human arrogance. It also inspired countless stories, films, and other works of art that explore the themes of love, loss, courage, and survival.
