SoiLab is a DIY focused channel where we use our soil testing lab to get data that helps address the questions that you have about your lawn, garden, ornamentals, or other growing spaces. Having access to a full production lab gives us a unique opportunity to run large numbers of soil tests to evaluate complex soil science concepts. This channel will allow you to grow your knowledge of plant and soil science while driving decisions to help you fertilize and amend your soil responsibly, all while increasing soil health.
We strive to make this information easily understandable, informative, and occasionally maybe even a little bit entertaining! Follow along to see field and lab demonstrations, trials, and even some replicated experiments that scientifically back the decision-making process for your lawn, garden, and landscape.
Matt’s Bio:
I first became interested in Plant & Soil Science when working on golf courses as a teenager and through my college years, spending nine seasons working at four different courses between Washington State and Virginia. I have an Associate’s degree in Turf Management as well as a B.S. and M.S. in Crop Science. When in graduate school I realized my passion for teaching and being an educator. Immediately following graduation, I accepted a position as Instructor/Associate in Research in the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences at Washington State University. An opportunity to teach back in my hometown arose just a couple of years later at the Aspen Award Winning Walla Walla Community College where I received Tenure and led the Agricultural programs for the bulk of my 14 years there. When not in the classroom, I also help train Master Gardeners in Soil science as well as community members through local Conservation District talks concerning soil health. I’ve also been the PI on a National Science Foundation Grant. When an opportunity arose to get back into Industry and still educate, just not in classroom setting, I jumped at it. I am now fortunate to be the Chief Scientific Officer at Predictive Nutrient Solutions where I get to perform and guide research primarily to help homeowners and DIYers grow the healthiest plants and build healthy soils.
