Büttner: Sustainable Consumption: Why We Should Buy Less!
In his lecture, Professor Dr. Oliver Büttner, an expert in economic psychology, will examine the economic and consumer psychology aspects of sustainable consumption and consumption reduction. Many people have positive attitudes toward sustainable behavior but often fail to put them into practice. Büttner will present current research from the university and offer insights into psychological theories and environmentally related behavior.

We are changing! Understanding climate change and acting together.
The human-caused climate crisis poses a significant risk to our civilization. What must we, as a society and as individuals, learn or unlearn in order to adequately address global and local challenges and establish future-proof, sustainable behavior? How can science provide support in this process, and how can scientific findings lead to sustainable action?
For the fourth year running, we at UDE4future will address these questions with the lecture series "We are changing! Understanding climate change and acting together," financially supported by the Rectorate of the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE). The lecture series is based on current research findings and scientific considerations from various disciplines regarding necessary changes, with a particular focus on open dialogue and discussion between citizens and laypeople and experts. This will be facilitated through an additional in-person event of the Climate Dialogue at the Essen City Library, involving civil society, as well as an online lecture series that also provides a platform for discourse.
Together, we will explore opportunities and possibilities that are already technically feasible and essential for socio-ecological transformation. The global challenges we face due to anthropogenic climate change require a collective shift in behavior and new standards of evaluation, and are therefore not merely academic questions, but above all societal ones. In a democratic society, discourse and the preservation of a culture of dialogue are essential for achieving collective action supported by a broad cross-section of society.
