Transfer Case Chain Deflection in 2001 w163.
I am making an addition to the description. I was getting a creaking noise when stopping or starting to move. I could not find the problem. I removed the transfer case to inspect the internals. I was concerned that the slack in the chain may be the problem. It was not. This is normal deflection for this chain. I could not find any information in any of the Mercedes literature for acceptable chain stretch so I thought this video may be of value to someone.
The noise turned out to be broken torsion bar shims. Luckily only a $30 or so part but I wish I had not taken the better part of a day to remove and inspect the transfer case. At least the write-up became a useful DIY on benzworld.
