Summary
Gafur was a poor weaver who had no land of his own but cultivated/farming in others land and was sharecropper. He lived with his teenage daughter Amina and his pet buffalo(bull) Mahesh. Due to three years continuous drought in Kashipur condition of Gafur and his family became very bad. They could not get their daily food but Gafur was very particular/serious about feeding Mahesh.
One day, when the village priest was passing by Gafur's house, he warned Gafur about the bad condition of Mahesh and told him that the landlord of the village would not spare him if Mahesh died of starvation/hunger.
Gafur requested for some crop-loan but the village priest refused. Days passed by, Amina used to cook some rice for her father which she used to get by begging or borrowing but Gafur was so fond of Mahesh that he used to feed the cooked rice to Mahesh,
sometimes even telling lies to Amina. Days passed by, one day Mahesh had gone to the garden of the landlord and destroyed his field. The landlord called the poor man and abused him and warned him, Gafurs condition became worse/bad day by day. He could not feed his pet animal properly.
One day a butcher came in his village, he wanted to purchase Mahesh. But Gafur actually did not want to sell off Mahesh because he loved Mahesh too much Second time again he entered the garden of land lord and destroyed the field. Landlord was very angry, he called Gafur and and his men beat him seriously.
When he came back home he was injured and wanted some water from Amina But Amina replied that there was no water in the house. Gafur became very angry with Amina and asked her to bring water immediately. After sometime, when Amina came back with water, she was too much tired so she fell down with pitcher.When Gafur saw the Amina was lying on the ground and pot has been broken and whatever water was left, Mahesh was drinking/sucking up the water it. Gafur was so angry and he was out of mind that he took out a stick/plough-head and hit Mahesh, as a result Mahesh fell dead. Amina started to weep.
In the night Gafur left the village with his daughter. He decided to work at the jute mill at fulbere, but actually they did not want to go there but now they didn't have any options. Amina was going to collect the drink bowl and her father 's brass plate. But Gafur told Amina to leave those things. Because they would pay for the penance for Mahesh. Finally he complained to Allah that He punished him for Mahesh died. He also prayed never forgive those people who did not give any food and drinking water for Mahesh and were actually responsible for its death.
