Balinese weddings unfold through sacred rituals deeply rooted in Hindu traditions, with the bride's family compound serving as the main site for ceremonies and farewells.

Days or even weeks in advance, family members and banjar (neighborhood community) start preparing the space, decorations and elaborate offerings like banten for the priest-led prayers.

The formal marriage proposal ritual, memadik, takes place early in the wedding sequence, after initial matchmaking but before major rituals. It typically occurs days to about a week before the main ceremony day, allowing time for date selection and preparations. During memadik, the groom's family visits the bride's compound to propose with gifts and symbolic exchanges.

The day before the wedding bride undergoes ngekeb, a cleansing bath with turmeric, flowers, and peacock leaves to purify her body and spirit before seclusion in her family home. She reflects on her future role as a wife during this introspective period.

The ngungkab lawang follows, where the groom collects the bride amid Vedic chants and betel leaf tossing to ward off evil spirits. This marks her departure from her natal home.
