Weight gain due to medication is always due to an increase in appetite, which may or may not be obvious. This video explores the side effect called hyperphagia, and describes various strategies for avoiding certain eating behaviors that lead to weight gain over time. Certain medications induce a veritable food addiction, such that most people lose control over their eating and weight loss becomes virtually impossible while taking those compounds. The goal is to avoid temptation and maintain a healthy weight, when it is truly in your best interest to continue taking that particular medicine.
Remeron (mirtazepine), Zyprexa (olanzapine) and Clozaril (clozapine) are among the worst offenders, but also the tricyclic agents, lithium, Depakote, most antipsychotic drugs, antihistamines, and, to a lesser extent, most SSRIs (with the notable exception of Prozac, but especially Paxil).
