How to Replace a Sump Pump – Step-by-Step Instructions
In this video, we walk you through the process of replacing a sump pump. The float switch on our old sump pump was malfunctioning, so we decided to upgrade to the Zoeller M63 Sump Pump. After consulting with two experts who own wet basement companies, I chose the M63 because it has more durable cast iron components and a better warranty than the M53 model. Plus, it can handle half-inch solids, like small rocks, that might be in your sump pit.
Steps Covered:
1. Removing the Old Pump: Start by removing the sump cover and the old sump pump. (You might want to keep the old pump as a backup in case of emergencies.)
2. Installing a Dual-Sensor Water Alarm: We add an extra layer of safety with a dual-sensor water alarm.
3. Installing the New Zoeller M63 Pump: Follow the Zoeller instructions, which recommend drilling a 3/16-inch weep hole at a downward angle to prevent air-locking in the pump.
4. Replacing the Check Valve: We swap the noisy check valve for a clear, quiet model – and the difference in sound is impressive!
5. Testing the New Pump: We test the new pump by running water into the sump basket. Be sure to check that the float switch isn't getting stuck.
6. Sealing the Sump Cover: Since the home has a radon mitigation system, we seal the cover to maintain the system's effectiveness.
