Gaited Horse Training in the First Year
This video shows where I began with Lady, my grade naturally gaited fox trotting horse in 2014. Lady had two gaits: a hard trot and a dog walk and had been used as a trail horse ridden on a long floppy rein. The owner was told that Lady was gaited and asked if I could bring out a smooth gait. My strategy: slowing down the walk to develop longer strides and then increasing the tempo before breaking into a hard trot; establishing a light contact with a snaffle bit and teaching leg, rein, weight, and seat aids.
