Welcome to a new CinemaJam "minijam"! This month, Sebastian G. breaks down the massive wave of streaming releases that hit platforms in October 2025.
From the return of directors like Shane Black and Paul Greengrass to acclaimed new seasons and essential documentaries, find out what's worth your time and what you can skip.
In this episode, we cover:
Movies:
Play Dirty (Oct. 1): Shane Black's (The Nice Guys) new film starring Mark Walbert and LaKeith Stanfield. It wasn't well-received by critics or the public , but if you're a fan of his "buddy criminal" style, Sebastian says you might find something to like.
The Lost Bus (Oct. 3): The big recommendation! Directed by Paul Greengrass (Bourne Ultimatum) and starring Matthew McConaughey as a bus driver saving a school bus during a disaster. This one is a hit with both critics (87% on Rotten Tomatoes) and the public (94%).
A House of Dynamite (Oct. 24): A political thriller that Sebastian enjoyed , though he cautions that "the ending leaves something to be desired".
Series & Documentaries:
The Last Frontier (Apple TV): A limited series with Jason Clarke as a marshal hunting escaped prisoners. Visually impressive ("You can see the money in the screen") , it's described as "ConAir but in Alaska".
The Diplomat - Season 3 (Netflix, Oct. 16): An absolute must-watch! Sebastian insists you need to watch all three seasons. He praises the "amazing" performances by Keri Russell and Rufus Sewell in this political/spy thriller.
Mr. Scorsese (Apple TV, Oct. 17): A 4-episode documentary series from Rebecca Miller covering the career of Martin Scorsese. Essential viewing for understanding the last 50 years of cinema.
IT: Welcome to Derry (HBO Max, Oct. 26): The IT prequel series. Sebastian expresses his disappointment; he's not enjoying it and feels it's not meeting expectations.
The Witcher - Season 4 (Oct. 30): The season with the big change: Liam Hemsworth replaces Henry Cavill as Geralt. Sebastian is curious but admits he "really, really, really" liked Cavill in the role.
Slow Horses - Season 5 (Apple TV): Another highly recommended British spy thriller. Unlike The Diplomat, Sebastian notes you can jump into this season (Season 5) without seeing the previous ones. He raves about Gary Oldman's "amazing" performance.
The Chair Company: A new comedy series with Tim Robinson. Sebastian hasn't watched it yet but notes its fantastic critical reception (100% on Rotten Tomatoes) for fans of uncomfortable humor.
