It so happened that the life of Kazuma Sato, a hikikomori obsessed with video games, was cut short in a traffic accident. Such was the harsh price for a good deed, for saving a man. However, upon waking up, the boy suddenly realized he was alive and well, and before him he saw a pretty girl, Aqua, who introduced herself as a goddess. Contrary to expectations, the goddess didn't say, "Come on, boy, brace yourself, we're about to send you to heaven!" On the contrary, the girl almost immediately began explaining that she was looking for a hero capable of defeating some evil Demon Lord and thereby saving some other world. And this "some other world" was incredibly reminiscent of a video game. Which, of course, was appealing.
"So, look," Aqua continued. "If you agree, you can take with you any item or ability. You can take a sword from the tail of an unknown monster, or the power of a mountain giant. So, which do you choose?" Kazuma didn't have to think long. "I choose you!" he realized, immediately throwing the intrusive goddess off-kilter. Thus begins the adventures of a strange hikikomori and a hapless goddess in a strange and unwelcoming world, where Kazuma will attempt to start a new, peaceful life, temporarily forgetting that evil never sleeps here.
