Accumulating too much stress can feel overwhelming, which often surfaces. Stress is the way in which the body reacts to changes, and also when it is constantly experienced, health changes can occur, such as having little vitality, not being able to have a quality sleep, back pain, it affects physical, mental and emotional well-being. Back pain is common, it is estimated that almost 75% of people complain of this discomfort in some way, which can manifest as recurring discomfort escalating to intense pain and muscle spasms. Two types of back pain have been cataloged:
Acute Pain--resolves after a few days, with self-care and you can return to your daily activities without any symptoms.
Chronic pain-this discomfort lasts up to weeks, persisting even after treatment.
Back pain is usually located in two parts: the upper back or the lower back. Both can alter posture and affect body movements, over time it can cause problems in the hips, neck, knees and feet.
Lower back pain-involves the muscles from the navel to the coccyx area, this manifests when there is a lot of accumulated tension, and reduces the ability to perform activities and desire to sit. Even a sedentary lifestyle for long periods of time can put strain on the back muscles and put pressure on the spine.
Upper back pain-this involves the muscles between your shoulders up to your chest, stress levels affect how you breathe normally. The more stress you experience, the more alteration you will notice in your breathing patterns. The shoulders round causing strain and tension in the upper and middle back.
The symptoms are different from person to person, each one has a pain threshold, tolerance and sensitivity. However, the discomfort manifests as stiffness, pressure, sore muscles, which prevents movement or normal activities. You can feel a shooting pain in the back for no reason, difficulty in adopting a comfortable position when sleeping, the pain triggers when getting up, turning or bending the waist, stiffness between the shoulders even in a seemingly relaxed state.
The impact of stress on health is because the body and mind are connected, when you get stressed the body activates the stress response, the stressor can be physical, like having to take a jump, or it can be psychological, concerned about the best results in the exam. The body interprets stressors as a threat or challenge to feel safe, as the flight or fight response, thus beginning a series of reactions to protect itself from being harmed. During this response to stress, hormones such as norepinephrine, epinephrine, cortisol are secreted that increase blood pressure, heart rate and respiratory rate, the pupils dilate, sweat is secreted, these short-term functions is to face the invaders. You may have noticed that when you feel stressed, your muscles begin to tighten because the body is sensing some danger and preparing to take immediate action, and when you enter a calm state, your muscles relax. However, when you notice that alert and defensive response, your body never gets a chance to de-stress, your muscles are constantly tense and this causes body aches.
The constant activation of the stress alert response causes cortisol release repeatedly, causing the body to become insensitive to cortisol as a mechanism involved in insulin resistance in diabetes. Cortisol dysfunction leads to stress-induced inflammation, which increases the risk of rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, chronic pain, sciatica, and pelvic pain. Stress impacts your nervous system, altering it, since the system consists of billions of neurons, which are specific cells that send information between the brain and the rest of the body using chemical and electrical signals. Neurons are responsible for the control of muscle movements. When overstimulated, they cause them to fire unpredictably causing cramps, pain, muscle tension, and spasms. The effect of stress on the nervous system has been shown to decrease the ability to respond to regulate pain.
