Knee Injection
Knee injection is a procedure performed to inject medications containing corticosteroids, hyaluronic acid, and platelet-rich plasma or stem cells.
These medications, which have anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and regenerative effects, are injected directly into the joint.
Specialist physicians assure that knee injection with corticosteroids is an effective treatment for patients with acute sports injuries or for those with chronic conditions involving pain, inflammation, or wear and tear of the joint structures. Furthermore, it accelerates the functional recovery of the joint and its action is faster compared to a traditional oral medication.
It is also useful for treating inflammatory diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis, diseases affecting the menisci or cartilage, and for cases of osteoarthritis. How is a knee injection performed?
The procedure for a knee injection is very simple. In fact, it is an outpatient procedure. Initially, the patient is given local anesthesia, and then the medication is administered.
The average duration of a knee injection is 2 to 5 minutes. During the injection, there is some pain, but it is bearable.
After the procedure, the patient's full recovery will be complete in 1 or 2 weeks. However, those who practice any sport or physical activity will not be able to resume training during the first week.
After the injection, the patient should undergo physiotherapy, hydrotherapy, and muscle strengthening exercises. This will depend on each individual, as it is not strictly mandatory.
For what conditions is a knee injection indicated?
A knee injection is indicated for patients whose pain does not subside with rest or after taking medication. This symptom can have a sudden onset, starting as a mild discomfort that then becomes intense. What medications are used for injections?
1. Anesthetics: Anesthetics are used in cases of severe or chronic pain and generally provide pain relief after application. Due to their immediate and temporary effect, anesthetics are used to confirm that the pain originates within the joint.
2. Corticosteroids: These are potent anti-inflammatories and can be applied alone or in conjunction with an anesthetic. The purpose of their injection is to combat pain and inflammation within a joint.
A knee injection with corticosteroids is usually performed every 3 months. Furthermore, excessive application in the same area is not recommended, as it can be harmful and cause side effects.
The main corticosteroids used in injections are methylprednisolone, triamcinolone, betamethasone, or dexamethasone. 3. Hyaluronic Acid: This is a component of synovial fluid, which is the natural lubricant found in joints. In degenerative diseases, such as osteoarthritis, there can be a loss of this synovial fluid.
When this happens, a specialist can inject hyaluronic acid into the joint using a technique called viscosupplementation. This creates a protective film behind the progression of wear and tear and, in turn, relieves pain.
