Shoulder Arthroscopy
Known as one of the most common surgical procedures, shoulder arthroscopy is a technique that was introduced to improve surgeries in this area of the body. In this article, you'll learn more about it.
What is shoulder arthroscopy?
This is a surgical technique whose advantage is that it is minimally invasive. Thanks to this method, specialists can repair joint injuries by making two or three small cuts in the skin.
A camera is inserted into these incisions, which are less than one centimeter, to obtain a direct view of the surgical site and all the necessary surgical instruments.
Shoulder arthroscopy, which became popular in the late 1980s, has become the technique of choice for treating shoulder pathologies. This is because it can address difficult-to-reach shoulder structures, allowing for a broader view from the inside.
Why is shoulder arthroscopy performed?
This surgical technique allows for the treatment of shoulder injuries with minimal invasion of the joint. Previously, shoulder injuries required complex surgeries, which required much longer recovery periods.
Shoulder arthroscopy is used specifically for four groups of conditions. We are talking about the following:
Subacromial syndrome.
Rotator cuff tear (one of the most common).
Shoulder instability and shoulder dislocation.
Traumatic injuries, such as glenoid fractures, acromioclavicular dislocations, and soft tissue injuries.
What does shoulder arthroscopy involve?
Shoulder arthroscopy is performed with the patient in the operating room, in a semi-recumbent (or lateral) position, with a traction-holding device placed on the arm undergoing surgery.
Then, through a posterior viewing portal, the specialist introduces the arthroscope into the glenohumeral joint and creates an anterior portal to properly inspect the joint.
The subacromial space, which contains the bursa, rotator cuff, and acromion, will be visualized. These are anatomical structures.
After the surgery is completed, the specialist will suture the portals, apply a bandage, and apply the sling.
For the procedure, local anesthesia will be administered at the level of the brachial plexus to numb the nerves leading to the arm, in addition to sedation. Thanks to this, the postoperative period will be much more comfortable and less painful, something that does not occur with traditional shoulder surgery.
Typically, a shoulder arthroscopy can last around 30 to 90 minutes, depending on the injury being treated.
After the procedure, the patient will only need to spend one night in the hospital and will be discharged the following day. Of course, they must follow a series of recommendations for a smooth recovery.
Preparation for Shoulder Arthroscopy
Before a shoulder arthroscopy, the patient should follow these guidelines:
Assess the injury in a consultation beforehand. This will allow the specialist to decide which aspects will be used for the surgery.
During the consultation, the patient must inform the specialist of any medications they are taking.
A preoperative study must be performed, including a complete blood count, biochemistry, coagulation, chest X-ray, and ECG.
Before undergoing shoulder arthroscopy, the patient should not consume solid food or liquids for 8 hours.
