Artist Semyon Faibisovich's creative method can be characterized as pictorial-documentary. He uses photography as a supporting medium, but also appropriates many elements of it into his own painting technique: double exposure, in which translucent frames are superimposed; motion blur and foreground focus; and note the glare and reflections in glossy surfaces. Like an anthropologist, he captures images of eras and countries through portraits of the people who live in the city and literally shape its atmosphere. Faibisovich continues the tradition of Russian critical realism, which emphasized the specific personality of the small, attentive, and focused individual.
The diptych "Oncoming Freight Train" from the Anton Kozlov collection belongs to a series of studies exploring the effect of "residual vision." The image depicts a train scene: a typical train car, curtains, food on the table, and nondescript passengers. All of this simultaneously creates a precise image of the everyday and timeless: the viewer is unable to identify the era. In this painting, the effect of a still photograph is achieved not only by the exquisite painterly technique, which realistically conveys the specific nature of film and the images captured on it, but also by the unique composition, which lacks the traditional center of a classical painting, and by the silhouettes cropped by the edge of the canvas. The impression of a casual glance is created, and the open composition and perspective make the viewer a participant in the events, a third passenger. This realistic image on the left side of the diptych is contrasted with the pseudo-abstract right side, in which the artist has actually captured the glare of sunlight on the back of the eyelid of a blinded "third passenger-viewer," looking not only at the sun but also at the canvas.
