Luca is now six years old, and to make everyday life easier for the family, they finally need a house adapted for people with disabilities. That's why they're building a barrier-free home. Everyone hopes that life will now be easier for the family.
Luca is starting school, and his little brother Rafael is accompanying him on this first day. The two-year-old is a bright and curious boy. With him, his parents, Eric and Susana Heimann, are experiencing the developmental milestones of a healthy child for the first time. And Rafael is growing up quite naturally with the fact that many things in his family's life are different from those of other families. Like the constant worry about Luca's ailing health. The couple wants to investigate whether a medical error during Luca's birth may have contributed to his disability. The court case concerning possible medical malpractice during delivery repeatedly stirs up memories of Luca's birth.
Susana and Eric Heimann have been together for more than 25 years and can rely on each other. Their son Luca was born 13 years ago. Their longed-for child was born with severe disabilities. And so, the couple's life hasn't gone as planned since then. But their love for each other and their positive outlook on life have enabled them to overcome the challenges of raising a family with a disability. This is the subject of the three-part documentary "Strong Together." Authors Klaus Bergner and Michaela Bruch have been following the couple and their son for over ten years.
