My work towards a fluent ambidextrous approach to drum kit performance continues! It’s very much a work in progress - it's really quite challenging working out all of the nuances with my non-dominant side.. however it's also very fun! I'm enjoying the process, I hope you enjoy a window into my practice room and development..

In 2021 I decided to document my progress through this series of short videos as I 'test' my ability to swap between my dominant and non-dominant sides. Whilst initially focusing on more set grooves, I plan to transition towards fills and movements, and eventually more open call and response improvising.
The drum kit setup itself is key in allowing me to play both right-handed/right-footed and also left-handed/left-footed. I’ve created an ergonomic symmetrical set up based around the unique Sleishman Twin Pedal and two DW 9000 cable remote hi-hat stands on which I can play either right-sided or left-sided without ever having to cross my hands. Whilst each side of the setup has the same mirrored elements, sonically they differ so that my right side is lower / drier / darker in pitch and timbre, and my left side is higher / washier / brighter. The goal is that I can choose which side to play to shape arrangements, performances and improvisations, and fluently swap between the two at any given moment.
