Do you want to minimize the recoil of your deer rifle? A gun that really kicks can cause you to flinch and miss your target. It’s a natural instinct to be afraid of that gun kicking you in the shoulder. Want to test someone out? Have them sit down at a shooting bench. Tell them you’ve put a round in the chamber and it’s ready to fire. And when they pull the trigger there is no bullet in the chamber. See if they flinch when they pull the trigger. 9 times out of 10 they will. They are afraid that Barnes bullets kicking them in the shoulder. The solution is a Vais muzzle brake. The reactive from both the fired bullet and propellant gases exiting the muzzle act directly down the centerline of the barrel. A muzzle brake will simply direct those gases out the ports in the muzzle brake itself.
Muzzle brakes are employed by the military on 90mm M3 guns used on M47 Patton Tanks. On those big guns a small length of tubing is mounted at right angles to the end of the barrel. Brakes use slots, vents, holes or baffles to redirect the burst of combustion gases that follows the departure of a projectile. Sounds complicated but it’s been used for many many years to reduce the recoil of the rifle. David Dury on this segment is helping me set up my new Remington 700 300 Win Mag with a muzzle brake that we believe is the best in the industry - the Vais muzzle brake. A 300 Win Mag is a big boar gun. You can kill an elephant, moose or elk at 300 yards with this rifle. But it will kick. Most people don’t want to shoot this gun without a muzzle brake - me included. A 180 grain .3000 load will have a muzzle velocity of 2,960 ft/second. That’s about a half a mile in one second is how far that bullet has traveled. It takes that serious kick of a 300 Win Mag to a 30/06 rifle kick. A big difference - and when you’re about to pull that trigger, you don't want to be afraid of that gun. Your gun is a tool if set up appropriately you’ll be able to accomplish the task you set out on. We showcase the Leupold scope and Jewell trigger in other segments. Stay tuned.
