Fear is reality-based, immediate and of the present moment, but anxiety is a symptom: it dwells in the past, or hides in a future that likewise DOESN'T EXIST. And so the anxiety itself should not exist, given that it is always a denizen of either past or future, neither of which are part of this reality. One weapon against catastrophic anxiety is mindfulness. Another is serotonergic medication (particularly reuptake inhibitors).
This brief video describes a case study and aims to expose the irrational nature of anxiety and some tools for extinguishing it.
If you are plagued with worry, ask yourself: "What is before me?" If you can set aside the calamity (which is entirely in your mind) for just a few moments--start with some deep breaths--you will see that nothing is on fire. There is no emergency. The eternal present moment, The NOW, is ever-present, and almost always calm; certainly compared to the noise in your frenzied mind when you are panicking, or simply overthinking and overreacting. Look around, be present, be mindful. It helps. But if you think you are one of those people who actually need medication, see a doctor.
