STUDLAGIL CANYON ICELAND
Studlagil Canyon can be found in East Iceland in the Glacier Valley called Jokuldalur. With the largest number of basalt rock columns in Iceland and a stunning blue-green glacial river to contrast, Studlagil is one of Iceland's hidden gems.
Although it was formed millions of years ago, Studlagil Canyon – the finest collection of basalt columns in Iceland has only been a tourist attraction for the last 15 years.
Previously this mighty natural phenomenon was hidden under the glacial waters of the Jokulsa a Bru river. After the Kárahnjúkar Hydropower Plant was built in 2009, the water levels of the river dropped revealing one of Iceland’s most incredible natural formations.
Today, Stuðlagil is the largest collection of basalt columns in Iceland. Rising either side of a river that changes colour with the seasons, it’s one of the most intriguing places to visit in Iceland.

Travel video of the main things saw and places visited. This was a 10 day road trip. Wanted to mainly do the Road 1 Ring Road route going counter clockwise. The camper van was not suitable for off road so had to stay on the main acceptable roads.

Iceland's capital and largest city is Reykjavík, which (along with its surrounding areas) is home to over 65% of the population. Iceland is the biggest part of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge that rises above sea level, and its central volcanic plateau is erupting almost constantly. The interior consists of a plateau characterised by sand and lava fields, mountains, and glaciers, and many glacial rivers flow to the sea through the lowlands. Iceland is warmed by the Gulf Stream and has a temperate climate, despite a high latitude just outside the Arctic Circle. Its high latitude and marine influence keep summers chilly, and most of its islands have a polar climate.
