CAMPING THINGVELLIR NORTHERN LIGHTS ICELAND
Campsite at the entrance to the one of the most prominent places in Iceland, the Þingvellir national park. Hot showers, beautiful nature, some electricity plugs, covered sitting places. Simple but purposeful.
This camp has several locations you can choose from, all located in the walking distance from the Þingvellir National park information center.
This is the campground at Nyrdri-Leirar, by the national park service centre.
Then the bonus of Northern Lights Aurora Borealis, WOW.
Dancing in the skies above the land of ice and fire, these striking blue and green lights are at the top of many people’s bucket lists.
The northern lights, also known as the aurora borealis, are the visible result of solar particles entering the Earth’s magnetic field and ionizing high in the atmosphere. The ionization gives them their colors, usually green, but occasionally purple, red, pink, orange, and blue.
The auroras only appear near the Earth’s magnetic poles. They’re usually visible above a latitude of 60 degrees north and below 60 degrees south, with the ‘southern lights’ being called the aurora australis.
Iceland sits at a latitude of approximately 64 degrees north, making it the perfect place to see the northern lights.

Travel video of the main things saw and places visited. This was a 10 day road trip. Wanted to mainly do the Road 1 Ring Road route going counter clockwise. The camper van was not suitable for off road so had to stay on the main acceptable roads.
Iceland is a Nordic island country in the North Atlantic Ocean and in the Arctic Ocean. Iceland is the most sparsely populated country in Europe. Iceland's capital and largest city is Reykjavík, which (along with its surrounding areas) is home to over 65% of the population. Iceland is the biggest part of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge that rises above sea level, and its central volcanic plateau is erupting almost constantly. The interior consists of a plateau characterised by sand and lava fields, mountains, and glaciers, and many glacial rivers flow to the sea through the lowlands. Iceland is warmed by the Gulf Stream and has a temperate climate, despite a high latitude just outside the Arctic Circle. Its high latitude and marine influence keep summers chilly, and most of its islands have a polar climate.
