Why Use Rhino?

Rhino is renowned for its flexibility in 3D design, combining both CAD (Computer-Aided Design) and CAM (Computer-Aided Manufacturing) functionalities. Its primary modeling system is NURBS (Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines), which allows for the creation of complex, free-form shapes. Rhino supports various modeling systems, including:

Mesh Modeling: Used in software like 3ds Max and SketchUp.
NURBS Modeling: The focus here in Rhino.
Sub-D Modeling: A hybrid approach found in Rhino and other software.

Modeling Systems Overview:

1. Mesh Modeling: Represents objects using polygons. It's great for simple and flexible modeling but can be less precise.
2. NURBS Modeling: Provides smooth and precise surfaces by defining curves and surfaces mathematically.
3. Sub-D Modeling: A hybrid system offering the smoothness of NURBS and the flexibility of mesh modeling.

Practical Application:

1. Basic Modeling in Rhino:
Sphere Modeling: Compare NURBS and mesh approaches for creating a sphere. NURBS provides a smooth surface, while mesh modeling requires increasing face count to approximate smoothness.

2. Creating Panels and Patterns:
Commands: Learn to use commands like Create UV Curve, Apply Curve, and Flow Along Surface to project and apply patterns to surfaces.
Example: Start with a simple surface, use Create UV Curve to generate UV curves and points, then apply pre-created patterns using Apply Curve.

3. Advanced Techniques:
Pattern Scaling: Use the Scale-Each command to adjust patterns with different scaling modes, such as normal, gradient, and random scaling.
Complex Surfaces: Apply patterns to complex, elevated surfaces and adjust using Rhino’s tools.
