On Your Wavelength is a site-specific interactive installation which uses participant’s brain data to create a large-scale immersive laser and sound show in real-time.
"In a dark space, participants will be fitted with an EEG head-set that will monitor the electrical activity of their brain wavelengths. Data will then be interpreted by computer software in real-time, and used to control a high-powered laser and sound composition; allowing thought patterns to directly modulate the physical light surrounding them. The installation highlights participants’ minds as tangible objects and generates a unique ‘brain signature’ for each user."
The experience lasts 3-5 minutes, depending on the intensity of brain activity. During the first few seconds of the experience, a brain ‘snapshot’ is created which defines the core elements of the visual and audio composition. The evolution of the composition is controlled in real-time by a combination of various brainwaves (i.e. Delta or Low Alpha) and the value of participant’s attention. After the snapshot, the participant has some time to adjust to the setting they are in and to identify how their brain activity is reflected through the visual and audio cues. The experience then starts evolving following a three-level story structure, each level being audibly and visually distinct. The participant may or may not reach the conclusion of the story, depending on the brain activity.
Laser controlled using Pangolin’s Beyond. Sound generated using Pure Data. EEG data received using NeuroSky MindWave and openFrameworks. Core software that drives the experience written in Processing, which controls submodules in Pure Data and Beyond using OSC.
