► IS HE QUALIFIED TO CARRY OUT THE SURGERY ??
Prof. Sergio Canavero, MD, is a renowned neurosurgeon from Turin, Italy. He is the former director of the Turin Advanced Neuromodulation Group and developed the GEMINI protocol, the scientific spinal cord fusion protocol for the first human head transplantation. Prior to that, Prof. Canavero worked as a neurosurgeon at the University Hospital Turin, Italy, for 22 years.
Mr. Canavero graduated cum laude from the University of Turin, passed the Foreign Medical Graduate Examination in the Medical Sciences (USMLE) in Philadelphia, PA, USA, was a visiting physician at the Neurosurgical Division of Karolinska Hospital Stockholm, Sweden, and is a professor honoris causa of Harbin Medical University, Harbin, China. Mr. Canavero was a member of the American Academy of Neurological and Orthopedic Surgeons (AANOS), a member of the New York Academy of Sciences, an intern at the Neurological and Neurosurgical Hospital Pierre Wertheimer in Lyon, France, and a consultant for the National Organization for Rare Disorders (NORD), USA. Mr. Canavero has published or contributed to more than 140 scientific articles (see list below). He speaks eight languages.
► When & Where will it Happen ?
The operation was originally scheduled for December 2017, some where in ITALY. But due to local pressure, the recipient Valery Spiridonov has backed off. So now it will be carried out in CHINA and donor will be a Chinese man who is Brain Dead. Government of China has given full support for the procedure
► Who will Do It ?
The whole transplant procedure will be carried out under direct supervision & authority of Italian Nuerosurgeon Dr. Sergio Canavero. He will be teaming with Dr. Xiaoping Ren, a neurosurgeon from China’s Harbin Medical University. Ren is no stranger to head transplants as he has performed the procedure on 1000 different mice
► How will it be Done ?
Dr Canavero has named the procedure HEAVEN, which is an acronym for head anastomosis venture. Anastomosis involves the surgical connecting of two parts.
The cost of the 36-hour operation, assisted by a medical team of doctors & experts ( 150 people), which could only be performed in one of the world’s most advanced operating theaters, has been estimated to cost US$ 21 million.
And he insists all of the necessary techniques to transplant a head onto a donor body already exist.
Both donor and patient would have their head severed from their spinal cord at the same time, using an ultra-sharp blade called GEMINI-TOME to give a clean cut.
The patient's head would then be placed onto the donor's body and attached using what Dr Canavero calls his 'magic ingredient' - a glue-like substance called polyethylene glycol (invented by William Sikkema) - to fuse the two ends of the spinal cord together.
The muscles and blood supply would be stitched up, before the patient is put into a coma for four weeks to stop them from moving while the head and body heal together.
