Liu Yang began his journey to the 2020 Olympic Games with the 2018 World Cup series in Cottbus, where he won gold on the rings. He repeated this success at the 2019 World Cups in Melbourne and Cottbus. Despite scoring the highest number of points in the series, he lost the tie-break against Eleftherios Petrounias and was initially denied a starting place.
Thanks to an additional quota for China, Liu was finally nominated for the 2020 Olympic Games. In Tokyo, he won the gold medal on the rings with a score of 15.500, while his teammate You Hao took silver.
