Description of Seoul:
Seoul (서울) is the capital of South Korea. With more than 11 million residents in the city limits and a whopping 24+ million people in the greater Seoul area (a.k.a. Seoul National Capital Area). Seoul is one of the world’s largest metropolitan cities and one of East Asia's financial and cultural epicenters. A fascinating blend of ancient traditions and cutting-edge digital technology, home to endless street food vendors and vast nightlife districts, an extraordinarily high-pressure educational system and serene Buddhist temples, a trend-setting youth culture and often crushing conformism, extraordinary architecture and endless monotonous rows of grey apartment buildings, Seoul is a city filled with stark contrasts.
Five Cool Facts About Seoul:
1. Seoul is home to a number of historic sites and monuments. In addition, the Seoul National Capital Area has four UNESCO World Heritage Sites. They are the Changdeokgung Palace Complex, the Hwaseong Fortress, the Jongmyo Shrine and the Royal Tombs of the Joseon Dynasty.
2. The number “4″ is considered extremely unlucky, to the point where most buildings in Seoul do not have a 4th floor.
3. All South Korean roofs are curved at the ends giving the appearance of a smile.
4. South Korean men love makeup, spending close to US$900 million a year, or a quarter of the world’s men’s cosmetics. Up to 20% of the male Korean population is reported to use makeup regularly.
5. In Korea, babies are considered one year old at birth.
