Cyprus’ First Neolithic Village: Life in the Stone Age
Cyprus is home to many ancient ruins, but these are particularly unique. This site represents the first village on the island, dating back to 7000 BC - Choirokoitia Neolitic Village, Limassol. At that time, over a thousand people lived here, cultivating wheat, fruits, and raising livestock. These settlers arrived from the Middle East during the Neolithic period, a time when humanity had not yet mastered the art of firing clay to make pottery. Consequently, all artifacts are made from unfired clay and stone.
The village was surrounded by a stone wall, indicating the presence of wild animals and hostile tribes. To enter the village, one had to navigate a zigzag stairs, which allowed the inhabitants to better defend against invaders by pelting them with stones.
Several huts have been reconstructed using local materials. Remarkably, even 9,000 years ago, people built such dwellings and coated them with lime. The fireplace was located opposite the entrance, and people slept on the upper tier. Deceased family members were buried directly beneath the floor of the hut.
This settlement existed for 1 thousand years, after which, approximately 6000 BC, people left the village, like the entire island, for unknown reasons, for reasons unknown— possibly due to natural disasters. Cyprus then remained uninhabited for 1,500 years until new tribes arrived around 4500 BC and began to resettle the island.
