UNIFIL: The UN mission on the Lebanese border

UNIFIL is one of the oldest UN peacekeeping missions. It is based in the town of Naqoura in southern Lebanon. The first units arrived in Lebanon 46 years ago, in March 1978, to oversee the withdrawal of Israeli troops. Initially, the contingent numbered 4,000 personnel. Today, it has grown to over 15,000. The mandate is renewed annually. In February 1922, Spanish General Arnoldo Lazaro Saenz was appointed head of the peacekeeping force. He replaced the Italian, Stefano Del Col.
