Rifles and Minie Balls: The widespread use of rifled muskets equipped with Minie balls (a conical bullet with a hollow base that expanded upon firing) greatly increased accuracy and range compared to smoothbore muskets.
This improved infantry firepower and effectiveness at longer distances which was a significant advantage for the North in the early years of the war.
