A new course on improvising Classical variations has just opened at Improv Planet with Dr. John Mortensen as instructor.
The course is pragmatic, showing step-by-step how to evaluate, choose, and adapt thematic material, how to generate ideas for variations, and how to practice for fluency. Students journey through the process of improvising variations multiple times on themes of Mozart, Handel, Beethoven, and Porpora.
Course lessons include video of John Mortensen’s live concert improvisations of variation sets, with detailed commentary on all aspects of the method.
