"I grew up in Washington DC. I was a daughter of a photographer so when I was a kid my mother had clients coming in and out of our house all the time. Wedding, portrait clients.
When I first moved to L.A. I started from scratch, no one here knew me. I had an office in an orange closet. From there I had to get clients, I had to get new equipment, it was a new challenge and it took my business to the next level.
This morning we're shooting a family and even though I have a daylight studio, I'm shooting with four people, so we have set up some strobes, we have got four ProFoto's, a couple of softboxes, a couple of umbrellas.
When I first got into this profession, it definitely was mostly men, and I felt looked down upon a little bit or just not really respected. That has changed a lot. The face of who is a professional photographer is a lot broader and a lot younger than it used to be.
I try not to be a 'jack of all trades'-photographer. I have found that I have become a photographer of people. I strive for authenticity in my work and I want it to look natural and uncontrived. I am trying to depart from striving for perfection that I think more traditional photographers used to go for.
Moving from DSLR, sometimes you have to make tough choices between highlights or shadows. With a camera like the Phase One, you are getting the image and you have a wide latitude to work with. It is sometimes hard to describe in words but it has that look. And I love that. It is beautiful.
My favorite part about L.A. has definitely been the people. Here there are so many interesting, creative people from all over the world. Other people who are making their living as creatives, I found that photographing them enriches my life."
