Attention | The Brain in Science
What is attention and what is its role in learning? Is there a unified attentional system in the brain, or does our ability to focus on a given task depend on the cooperation of distributed systems? Do computer games merely weaken our attention, and therefore hinder our ability to learn new things? In this episode, we examine the neurocognitive theory of attentional networks and consider its implications for our everyday learning.
Like our entire mental life, learning is made possible by the brain. Learning is something we do every day, even if we don't realize it. And so it is throughout our lives. In this series, we examine the cognitive processes involved in learning: attention, curiosity, making mistakes, and knowledge consolidation. We also develop guidelines for learning and teaching others, based on the current state of psychological and neuroscientific knowledge.
