Debris is a common challenge for contaminated sediment remediation projects that include environmental dredging. During implementation, debris may contribute to resuspension, release, and residuals generation. Debris can also be an important factor in the effectiveness, implementability, and cost of contaminated sediments projects. Available technical guidelines and resources, while appropriately identifying debris concerns, have not included extensive coverage of environmental and operational considerations for various debris conditions.
Presenters Jamie Beaver and Matt Bowman offer a review of environmental impacts potentially posed by debris, proposed debris definitions and characterization matrix, investigation approaches to improve project planning prior to construction, and operational approaches for removing and managing debris during construction.
