Cantos was created in 2012 on commission from the Society for New Music. The 3 movements are I. Hammer II. String III. Wind. Having had years of experience scoring for films, this project was a unique experience for the composer. Traditionally, Rob Deemer had a completed film with which to set music to and the resultant score would be subservient to the dialogue and structure of the film. In this case, his collaborator Courtney Rile worked with him in creating concepts for the 3 movements. They connected things like the percussive nature of raindrops to the hammer-like articulations within the ensemble (including the tubular bells being performed by a hammer itself), and the concept of wind as it relates to both creating visual beauty with clouds and creating aural beauty with a flute. Their intention with Cantos was to allow the music and visuals to exist simultaneously on an equal footing. Cantos, 2012, with video by Courtney Rile, is available for purchase & download at Naxos.

Courtney Rile is an American filmmaker and founding partner of Daylight Blue Media Group based in Syracuse, NY. Rile holds a BFA in Video Art from Syracuse University's College of Visual and Performing Arts and an AA in TV, Radio, and Film Communications from Montgomery County Community College in Pennsylvania. As a video artist creating visual interpretations of music, she has performed several times with musicians including four appearances with the Syracuse based orchestra, Symphoria. She collaborated with composer Rob Deemer to create Cantos, commissioned by the Society for New Music, as well as composer Elliot Sneider to create video for City Colors, City Lights. Her work has been seen on Huffington Post, ESPNU, WCNY, Manhattan News Network, screened internationally in festivals in London and Spain, in New York City as part of NewFilmmakers NY at Anthology film Archives, screened in Syracuse, NY at the Everson Museum of Art, Syracuse Stage, ArtRage Gallery, Palace Theatre, Light Work, LeMoyne College, Syracuse University, as part of the Syracuse International Film Festival and One Take Super 8 Event. While Rile's experience reflects a breadth of subjects and styles, she excels at creating the montage, carefully weaving together image, sound, and music to reflect a deeper undercurrent of emotion and meaning.
