2024 PAD Guidance For Pre Amputation Protocols I Dr Mehdi Shishehbor

THE 2024 GUIDELINES ARE THE LATEST EVIDENCE-BASED RECOMMENDATIONS THAT GUIDE CLINICIANS IN THE DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT OF LEG PAD, OR LOWER EXTREMITY PAD ACROSS FOUR CLINICAL PRESENTATION AREAS:
1. ASYMPTOMATIC DISEASE
2. CHRONIC SYMPTOMATIC PAD
3. CHRONIC LIMB THREATENING ISCHEMICA
4. AND ACUTE LIMB ISCHEMIA
This is critical information for every patient to review upon diagnosis and before any treatment so that you can ensure your care team is following guidelines.
You might wonder, "Why wouldn't my doctor follow society guidelines as they come highly recommended, they have great reviews, and they work at a top name facility."
We at the Global PAD Association ask that question every single day as we find too many doctors don't follow guidelines for pre-amputation protocols.
Society guidelines state that a doctor should not only perform a vascular evaluation at the very least, but also attempt to restore inline bloodflow to the wound prior to amputation. Data shows that more than 60% of all circulation related amputations are being performed without a doctor attempting to restore inline flow, and 90% of those are being performed without any vascular evaluation at all.
Society guidelines also state that doctors should not be performing angiograms or bypass surgery for patients classified as 'intermittent claudicants' without conservative therapy first, and yet that is happening all too often as well.
So, when you think about whether or not your doctor may not be following society guidelines, it's worth always getting a second or even third opinion to make sure you and your care time are on the right track with an appropriate treatment plan that is aligned with society guidelines.
