Maggie Oliver was a detective with the Greater Manchester Police. She resigned in 2013 rather than join the cover-up by the police of widespread child rape and sexual exploitation by grooming gangs in many British cities, including Rochdale. She was vilified and paid a very high personal price for standing up against the establishment on behalf of the victims. She now runs The Maggie Oliver Foundation which offers support, advice, therapy, training and education to those who have been affected by sexual abuse. She has found that the 'establishment', for example in the form of the Independent Inquiry into Child Sexual Abuse chaired by Baroness Jay, continues to try to minimise the failures of institutions to protect children who are often seen as worthless. Child sexual exploitation continues. Maggie emphasises the importance for any victim to keep timely, detailed records of what is happening to them (this includes keeping a record of how a complaint or investigation is conducted) rather than rely on others, such as the police or other institution, to gather evidence.
