Earlier this month, a Spicejet flight encountered severe turbulence approaching Durgapur, India, for landing. The turbulence left 14 passengers and three cabin crew in critical condition, with at least 40 passengers sustaining injuries. The majority of the severe injuries sustained were to the head, spine, shoulder, and forehead. According to a report from India's DGCA, the seatbelt sign was on when at the time of the incident.
Cellphone footage posted on social media captures the passengers' screams as they encounter the rough air, followed by scenes of a bloodstained cabin littered with debris and aircraft equipment jolted loose from the turbulence.
The plane landed safely and was taken out of service for inspection and repairs.
