19-OCT-1984 Norwegian Coast just west of Narvik

Our orders are to stop a NATO sub carrying commandos from landing near Narvik.

We had transited down Norwegian coast after sinking the Kobben near Alta back on the 16th.

We then intercepted a submarine contact coming in from the southwest.

We detected the Sturgeon at 11 km range, which I doubt we could have done without the towed array. However, both of us fired, and his torpedo definitely has the advantage on me, but my plan is to shoot the Vodopod at him to negate that advantage, and partly to get him to dodge, which would allow the TEST-71M to catch up.

Unfortunately, the Vodopod requires launching at a much shallower 60m. So that's a bit of a PITA. I chose to drop 1.5 km ahead of him, which, given roughly 80 seconds from launch to drop , should be about right for a sub of 28 kt flank speed. In the meanwhile, I have to dodge his two torpedoes, which are coming in sans wires due to his flank speed dash. I just need to get out of their detection cone BEFORE they activate...

And my Vodopod drop was almost perfect, as he went immediately defensive, and the UGMT-1 (the actual torpedo) chased him all over the place, as he was frantically turning this way and that, going up, going down, dropping noisemakers, making knuckles... during which the TEST-71M, even at transit speed, have gone about 5 km... when he made a mistake and the UGMT-1 caught him and he sank.

That was indeed our target, and we got another medal.

Then it's free-roam time, where we are to hunt whatever target we see fit, preferably convoys and capital ships...

We tried to head past the GIUK gap. We were intercepted by a submarine contact. We identified a Skipjack, but was unable to locate her after that, and we disengaged.

And the war continues in the next episode.
