A differential is used to make each left and right wheel able to rotate on different rpms. These different rpms are used while turning/steering the vehicle. When a vehicle is turned, it requires each left and right wheel to spin at different rpms or else each wheel will need to slip everytime the vehicle is turned.
Differential advantage:
Allows for sharper turns
Makes a car turns so much faster (depending on how wide your car is)
potentially increased top speed due to independent wheel rpm
