Leavenworth, Kansas

Founded in 1854, Leavenworth was the first incorporated city in Kansas territory, seven years before statehood. Leavenworth sits between Ft. Leavenworth to the north and Lansing, KS to the south. Leavenworth is also home to the first U.S. Federal Prison, lovingly referred to as The Big House. (My family calls it the Federal Hotel).
Buffalo Bill Cody moved to the Leavenworth area with his family when in June of 1854 when he was 9 years. Wild Bill Hickock moved to Leavenworth in 1855 at the age of 18. He and Cody both worked for Russell, Majors and Waddell, founders of the Pony Express. Bill Cody started as a messenger, then a oxen herdsman before becoming a pony express rider, while Wild Bill was a teamster. Wild Bill's claim to fame in Leavenworth is that he rode his horse into a second floor pool hall on a bet.
Other famous residents and visitors to Leavenworth:
Abraham Lincoln - visited in 1859 during his presidential campaign
